Overview

As part of the City’s Next Generation Initiatives, a program set to inspire government innovation by developing the talent pipeline of the next generation of government leaders. We've expanded the internship program to help bridge the generation gap and encourage college students and/or recent graduates to consider a career in local government.

The Internship Program

Our internship program is offered year-round and provides more than what might be expected during your average city internship. Interns can expect to be a part of an exciting holistic curriculum that provides training in their field, mentorship, leadership development and other unique opportunities. Students also get the chance to work side-by-side with government officials and work on meaningful projects, which they get to present to their cohorts and City staff at the end of the program.

Shadow Day

Shadow Day March 2019

The Human Resources Department has provided an opportunity for students to engage with the City staff through Shadow Day, a two-day informative look at how municipal government operates. Students may also apply to the semester-long internship program. The internship program is not all work and no play. HR also sponsors several social events throughout the semester. The events serve as networking opportunities to develop long-lasting friendships and open doors for future employment.

In addition to acquiring practical skills, interns that successfully complete the internship program are given preference in the City’s recruitment/selection process.

Florida City Government Week

We provide middle school and high school students  the opportunity to engage in local government through Florida City Government Week and Student Government Day at City Hall.
