Pavement Management
The City of Delray Beach owns and maintains over 150 miles of roads and the Public Works Department is responsible for analysis of roadway conditions, planning roadway improvements/reconstruction and implementing pavement preservation techniques. In the past, Public Works has obtained a pavement condition assessment report every 5 years. This assessment assigns each roadway with a Pavement Condition Index (PCI), which is a numerical rating of the pavement condition based on the type and severity of distresses observed on the pavement surface. The PCI value of the pavement condition is represented by a numerical index between 0 and 100, where 0 is the worst possible condition and 100 is the best possible condition.
The City uses this data to guide the planning and implementation of roadway reconstruction and pavement preservation. As we move into the future, Public Works is currently evaluating newer technologies that use artificial intelligence to more consistently, and less objectively, assess pavement condition and has the potential to continuously monitor conditions utilizing sensors affixed to the City’s existing fleet of vehicles. We will be able to leverage the additional data to manage our roadway system more efficiently and with the greatest cost-benefit to the City.
