This program is geared toward young people aged 14-21 years old exploring a career in the fire service. Members develop leadership skills and get a first-hand look at the work that firefighters perform every day, which allows them to decide if it will be the career they want to pursue. Explorers perform community service by attending street cleanups, fire station open houses and public education seminars.

Members attend meetings twice a month where they learn about the fire service under the guidance of trained firefighters. Each member is issued a uniform and bunker gear that they use during training at the department. They are able to participate in the department’s ride-along program, which matches qualified Explorers with career firefighters. This enables them to ride on shift and see the job up close and personal, going to all the calls and gaining insight into what it takes to do the job.

Each year, Explorers participate in Firematics competitions, the annual Fire Service Leadership weekend and attend the Fire Rescue East conference sponsored by the Florida Fire Chiefs’ Association.

Meetings are held on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month from 6 – 9 p.m. at DBFR Station 111, 501 W. Atlantic Ave. So if you think you've got the right stuff, come see what you've been missing.
