On October 26 and 27, 2023, the City hosted an educational symposium, with a panel of subject matter experts to discuss how historic districts benefit and impact communities, how they preserve the character and charm of downtowns, the economics of historic districts, and the legal and financial implications of historic designation.

The Community Discussion, held on the second day, offered attendees the opportunity to engage in the conversation by encouraging an open dialogue and exchange of ideas and concerns.

 

Our Panel:

  • Donovan D. Rypkema – Principal at PlaceEconomics, a Washington, D.C.-based real estate and economic development consulting firm which provides services at the nexus of historic buildings and economic development.
  • Timothy E. McLendon – Professor at the University of Florida Levin College of Law. His research has involved Everglades restoration policies, oil spill response and recovery, local land use law, sustainable development, historic preservation law, Florida constitutional law, and international environmental law.
  • Megan McLaughlin – Director of Preservation Projects at Plusurbia. She has a Master’s in Architecture and is an AICP-certified planner with over fifteen years of experience in the fields of historic preservation, and urban design, and urban planning.
  • Ruben Acosta – MFA in Architectural History. He is currently serving as the Bureau Chief & Deputy State Historic Preservation Officer in the Division of Historical Resources of the Florida Department of State.
