AUGUST - SEPTEMBER 2024 - NOTICE
The Historic GIS Map will be intermittently down for updates.
The Delray Beach Historic GIS was created in the summer of 2022 and was financed with historic preservation grant assistance provided by the Bureau of Historic Preservation, Division of Historical Resources, Florida Department of State.
The project began in 2020 with the scanning of paper historic preservation records stored in the Development Services Department of the city of Delray Beach. The scanning project was also financed with historic preservation grant assistance provided by the Bureau of Historic Preservation, Division of Historical Resources, Florida Department of State. Scanned records include Local and National Register of Historic Places designation reports, Florida Master Site File forms, historic resource surveys, Historic Preservation Board records, to name a few. The scanning project included creation of digital search mechanisms for each record known as “metadata tagging” and those records were made available to the public via the Delray Beach city website.
According to USGS (United States Geological Survey), a GIS is “a computer system that analyzes and displays geographically referenced information. It uses data that is attached to a unique location.” A GIS connects data and information to a location on a map, which helps users to understand patterns, relationships and geographic context.
The Delray Beach Historic GIS links the location of each historic property and historic district to records and spatial information for that location. The records for each individual property or district may include a photograph, construction date, designation reports, and documented architectural style. Also, the location of each Historical Marker within the city of Delray Beach is provided on the GIS along with a link to the Delray Beach Historical Marker Brochure. The brochure includes a static map that can be viewed on-line or downloaded so that the user can visit each marker and site virtually or in-person.
