Home MenuWater Service Line Inventory
The City of Delray Beach conducted the required Water Service Line Inventory from November 2022 – April 2024 of the water distribution system, including city-owned and customer-owned portions. A service line is pipes that connect homes, businesses, and other properties to the City’s distribution system and play an important role in delivering safe drinking water.
The portion of the water service line from the water main to the water meter is City-owned (including the water meter), and the portion that follows behind the water meter to the threshold valve and beyond would be privately owned.
We are pleased to inform our residents that we have not found any lead service lines in our distribution system.
Determining Your Service Line Material
Service lines are classified into one of the following categories for the inventory:
Lead – This means the service line is made of lead. These pipes will require replacement in the future. Broward County has not found any lead service lines.
Non-lead – This means the service line is made of another material other than lead, such as plastic, copper, or galvanized iron.
Galvanized Requiring Replacement (GRR) – This means the customer-owned service line is made of galvanized iron, and the utility-owned service line was once made of lead or can not be proven to never have been lead in the past. These pipes will require replacement in the future because if the utility side was ever lead, the lead flakes could have become lodged in the galvanized line.
Unknown – This means the service line material has not yet been identified. If you know the material of your privately owned service line, please call 561-243-7312 and report the material.
The following are examples of what your service line may be made of:
Copper - The pipe should be the color of a penny. A scratch test may be performed if necessary.
Plastic - Smooth pipe that can be different colors. Examples may be Plastic Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or Polyethylene. Magnets will not stick.
Lead - The pipe will have a dull silver/gray color. A scratch test may be performed, and the area will be soft, easy to scratch, and shiny. A magnet will not stick to lead.
Galvanized Pipe - The pipe will be a silver/gray color. If performing the scratch test, the pipe will be difficult to scratch. A magnet may also be used to verify, as it will stick to the pipe
